How to Fix a Leaking Shower Head
A dripping shower head is one of those jobs households put up with for months, and how to fix a leaking shower head starts with one question. Is the head emptying itself, or is a seal inside the wall mixer failing? The first kind fixes itself, and the second needs a licensed plumber. North Lakes Plumbing Service answers that question on North Lakes bathrooms most weeks, because the estate's 2000s-onward family homes are now old enough for their original mixers to start weeping.

Here is what the drip means, where it comes from, and which parts of the fix Queensland law leaves to a licence holder.

Normal Drips Versus a Failing Seal
A few drips straight after a shower mean nothing: the head and arm hold a little leftover water, and it drains away on its own within a minute or two. A drip that keeps going once the taps are shut means something else entirely. Water is passing through the mixer, past a washer or cartridge worn beyond its seal, and the head is simply where the problem becomes visible.
The check costs you nothing. Watch the head for a few minutes after switching off, and a short drain-down tells you all is well. A drip that runs past that, or still going overnight, is a seal on its way out.

Where a Dripping Shower Head Comes From
A drip has three possible homes: the screw joint on the arm, the mixer buried in the wall, and the diverter on a bath-and-shower set. Each source has its own signature:
The arm joint
water showing at that join only while the shower runs points to a loose connection or a tired seal there. Shower off, leak gone.
The wall mixer
a drip that continues after the taps shut, or overnight, comes from here. An internal washer or cartridge has worn, and water slips past it into the head.
The bath diverter
on a combination fitting, run the bath taps and watch the head. Water climbing out of it while the bath fills means a worn diverter or a restricted spout, and the head is doing nothing wrong.
Scale deserves a mention as well. Mineral crust can plug the spray holes and push water out through gaps that were never meant to spray, which reads as a leak and is really a blockage.
One more thing explains why mixer faults show up strangely. The cartridge inside governs flow and temperature both, so a tired one announces itself as a drip, a stiff handle, or water that will not hold its heat.

Still Dripping After a Repair Attempt
A drip that outlasts a fresh washer or a new cartridge usually means the valve seat or the mixer body itself has worn, and a licensed plumber assesses that. A washer presses against the valve seat to close, and a cartridge seals within the mixer body. Damage either surface and no replacement part can sit tight against it, so the drip simply carries on.
Opening a mixer counts as minor work in Queensland: a QBCC licensee does it, no permit applies, and no Form 4 goes in. That keeps the paperwork light for you.
Swapping another part and hoping is not a plan. The seat or the body needs eyes on it, and ours go there first.

Can You Replace a Shower Head Yourself
Yes, Queensland treats a shower head swap as unregulated work, open to anyone with the knowledge and skill to do the job properly, licence or none. No approval from the QBCC or the local council is required, and nothing about the job gets reported. Whatever your licence status, the finished work still has to meet the minimum standards the legislation and codes set.
Inside the wall is a different story. The regulator's unregulated list stops at the head, so the mixer, its cartridge and its valve all stay jobs for a licensed plumber.
Renters share in that split. On a Queensland rental, changing a shower head sits among the handful of jobs a licensee does not have to attend. Tenancy law still puts the owner or manager under a duty to keep the place in good repair through the tenancy, so a dripping mixer is worth reporting straight away.
On any replacement head, look for its water rating label. Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards, or WELS, is the national scheme that registers shower heads for efficiency, and a head sold in Australia carries a star rating and water use details wherever it is listed, online included.

When to Call a Plumber
Ring us when the drip outlasts the drain-down, when the handle stiffens, or when the temperature drifts. All three point at the mixer, and the mixer is licensed territory. Left alone, a drip keeps working on the seal, marks the shower recess, and cycles hot water nobody asked for.
Mixer, diverter and arm repairs sit on our shower repairs page. Our vans reach every pocket of the estate, from the streets around Costco North Lakes out to the townhouse rows near The Corso. Each visit starts by tracing the drip to its source.
Dripping Shower Questions
Call (07) 3520 4094What causes a shower head to leak?
Four culprits, mostly. A tired seal at the arm joint leaks only during use, and a worn internal part in the wall mixer drips after the taps shut. Scale blocking the spray holes and a leaking bath diverter on a combination set cover the rest. We trace which one is yours on North Lakes bathrooms all year.
Who can replace a shower cartridge in Queensland?
A licensed plumber, every time. Queensland classes work on a mixer's internals as minor work, which a QBCC licensee may do without a permit or a Form 4. The unregulated list covers the head only, so the cartridge stays licensed work.
How much does it cost to fix a leaking shower head in North Lakes?
Two things drive the price: where the fault sits, and how we reach it. A head swap and a mixer rebuild are different jobs, and a mixer buried deep in a wall costs more to open than one with clear access. Your fixed quote confirms the figure before work starts.
What should I look for on a replacement shower head?
The WELS label. A shower head sold in Australia has to be WELS-registered and show its star rating and water efficiency details wherever it is advertised for sale, online included.
