Can You Install a Gas Cooktop Yourself

No, a home owner cannot do it legally. Queensland treats all gas work as licensed work: installing, removing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing and certifying a gas system, its pipework and its connections.

Hooking up a cooktop falls inside that definition, and so does converting or moving one. Check any tradie's gas work licence before they begin, and a job without one is a job that stops.

What a Gas Appliance Installation Involves

The job has four parts: connect the appliance to its gas point per the maker's instructions, set the clearances, test for leaks, then hand over the paperwork.

  1. The gas point

A point already sitting behind the cabinet means a simple swap; a new line run from the meter, or a fresh LPG cylinder set-up, means more pipework. Either way the supply gets checked.

  2. The instructions

Cooktops, ovens and heaters go in exactly as the installation sheet directs.

  3. Clearances

The same sheet fixes the distances to the rangehood, cabinetry and anything that burns nearby, and the gasfitter sets the appliance within them.

  4. Leak testing

Every new joint is tested before we leave.

  5. The paperwork

You receive a gas system compliance certificate straight away, confirming the finished work meets the rules.

A hob on its own, an oven built into cabinetry and a freestanding cooker with its own oven each take the supply differently, and the burner count changes the job as well.

Natural Gas, LPG and Conversions

First the gasfitter confirms the supply can handle the extra load, whatever the appliance.

  1. Bottled gas

cylinder storage and the vaporisation rate have to keep up with the new burners.

  2. Piped supply

the meter gets a capacity check, along with the pipe sizing between it and the appliance.

  3. Network notice

on a metered supply, the licence holder has to tell the gas network operator before a brand-new system goes in, and again when the added demand reaches 100 megajoules per hour.

Most appliances suit one fuel type. A cooktop moving from a natural gas home to an LPG home needs converting first, and converting counts as gas work as well. The gasfitter fits the maker's conversion kit for that model and tests the result.

Safety Features to Look for When Buying

Three safety features separate a good buy from a risky one: the approval badge, flame failure, and automatic reignition.

  1. The badge

is the appliance's national gas device approval, and anything sold without one is not a lawful choice.

  2. A flame failure device

shuts off the gas when a burner flame dies, which matters most in a busy family kitchen.

  3. Automatic reignition

relights the burner by itself instead of letting gas run unnoticed.

Whatever you choose, the appliance needs periodic checks and servicing by a licensed gasfitter, not only at installation.

Why Gas Installation Quotes Differ

Quote differences come down to five drivers, and your fixed quote puts each one on paper before fitting begins.

  1. Gas point versus new line

A swap at a point already in place costs less pipework than running a line out or installing cylinders.

  2. Appliance type

A four-burner hob, a six-burner model and a full freestanding cooker are three different jobs.

  3. Supply checks

Vaporisation, meter capacity and pipe sizing happen whatever the fitting involves.

  4. Conversion

Switching fuels adds the conversion kit plus extra testing.

  5. Bench changes

Altering cabinetry to meet the maker's distances adds work.

Building approvals at the area level came to 289 dwellings across five years, and just nine in 2021-22. Most cooktop jobs we price around Endeavour Boulevard are therefore swaps in 2000s kitchens, not first fit-outs.

At the last census, 84.9 percent of homes in North Lakes were separate houses, with 59.9 percent at four bedrooms or more. The typical quote is for a full family kitchen rather than a compact unit bench.

Smell gas at any stage? Stop and read about gas leak repairs first. Backyard heaters and barbecues run off bayonets, which our gas bayonet installation page covers.

Gas Cooktop Installation FAQs

Call (07) 3520 4094

Who can legally install a gas cooktop in Queensland?

Queensland gives all gas work, cooktop connections included, to licensed gasfitters. Check our gas work licence before the fitting starts; a lawful job never begins without one.

Can I install a gas cooktop myself?

No, you cannot. Fitting, altering and certifying gas appliances all count as licensed work in Queensland. There is no do-it-yourself version: our gasfitter does the connection, the leak test and the certification.

What safety features should a new gas cooktop have?

Three features matter: a badge showing the appliance passed the national gas device approval scheme, a flame failure device that shuts the gas when a flame dies, and automatic reignition.

How long does a gas cooktop installation take in North Lakes?

The clock turns on whether a gas point waits inside the cabinet or a new line has to run, plus any conversion and the supply checks. Your fixed quote spells the job out.

Does my North Lakes kitchen need clearance around the cooktop?

Yes, it does. The manufacturer's instructions set the clearance rules, and the gasfitter positions the cooktop to meet them. No distance figures are standard across models.
